Alex Fraser Bridge

Delta, B.C.
(Annacis Island Bridge)

When built in 1986, this bridge held the world record span for cable-stayed structures at 1,525 feet. The complete superstructure, including cables, was erected in ten and a half months of single shift work. Somerset produced and supervised the erection scheme including the development of all the purpose-built equipment.

One innovation used was self-jumping platforms (bottom right) providing access and cable-stay deflecting mechanisms to handle the prefabricated stays, weighing up to 25 tons, at the tower face 500 feet above ground. The bridge was built using the balanced cantilever method requiring precise sequencing of erection to ensure stability. The steelwork and precast deck were erected by four stiff leg derricks sitting on specially built tiedown frames (bottom left) which could be rolled ahead sequentially.
