Location: Alton, IL Contract Value:

For this famous cable-stayed bridge, Somerset provided all the equipment design plus erection schemes. To erect the steel grid for the deck and the precast for the roadway, the contractor wanted to use a barge mounted stiffleg derrick and tower. To attain the necessary stability and buoyancy, the derrick sat across two barges. Somerset designed the strongbacks and all the reeving and rigging plans. The tower cranes that built the towers and first cable-stays and deck were mounted on brackets that were tied to the pylons. Somerset engineered the brackets to account for all construction and wind loading.
