Manama-Muharraq Crossing

Location: Bahrain Contract Value:

The second Manama-Muharraq Crossing in Bahrain is a precast segmental cable stayed bridge. The fully hydraulic powered derrick was conceived, designed, and built by Somerset and had a lifting capacity of 150 tonnes. It was self-propelled and could transport itself from the end of one cantilever to the other on rubber tires. This allowed the contractor to use one machine instead of the traditional two.

After completing the main span, the derrick was designed to sit at 90 degrees to the bridge to install the 70-tonne wing segments. The derrick was light and very compact and was shipped in only two containers.
